Christoph Gedschold

Christoph Gedschold is the designated music director of Leipzig Opera from September 2022, where he has been Kapellmeister since 2015. He has established himself also at Semperoper Dresden with „Freischütz“, „Zauberflöte“, „Don Giovann“ and the new production of Weinbergs „The passenger“ and Hamburg State Opera with „Katia Kabanowa“ „La Bohème“, „Simon Boccanegra“ and „Eugen Onegin“. At Frankfurt Opera & Wiener Festwochen he led the very succesful production of Weinbergs „The Passenger“ and returned to Frankfurt for „Ariadne of Naxos“. In Leipzig he had great success with the new production of „Freischütz“, „Rusalka“ and „Pagliacci/Bluebird“ and „Verkaufte Braut“. At Cologne Opera he conducted „Rusalka“ and a new production of „Zauberflöte“. After a new production of „Götterdämmerung“ at Opera Oviedo in 2019, he returned to Oviedo for concerts with OSPA (Dvorak No. 8).

Gedschold worked with the Orchestre Symphonique de Montréal (Shostakovich No.11), with Staatskapelle Dresden (Strauss-Bürger als Edelmann), MDR Symphony Orchestra in Leipzig (Carmina Burana) and with Robert-Schumann-Philharmonie in Chemnitz (Mahler No.7).

2021/22 he will do a new production of „Lohengrin“ at Oper Leipzig, conduct „Götterdämmerung“ in Leipzig; return to Semperoper Dresden („Elektra“), will conduct „Lucia di Lammermoor“ at Deutsche Oper Berlin and debut with Copenhagen Philharmonic (Bruckner 7).

Born in Magdeburg/Germany, he studied piano and conducting in Leipzig und with Christof Prick in Hamburg. During his studies 2001 he was Korrepetitor at the International Operastudio in Zurich, followed 2002 being Kapellmeister at Theater Lucerne. During this time he worked at Lucerne Festival with Claudio Abbado, Mariss Jansons and Pierre Boulez and was member of the Lucerne Festival Orchester. He was also assistant of Ulf Schirmer at Bregenzer Festival. 2005 Christoph Gedschold became Korrepetitor, Kapellmeister and Assistent of Music Director Christof Prick at State Theater Nürnberg.

2009-15 he was First Kapellmeister at State Theater Karlsruhe und conducted with new productions „The Greek Passion“ by Martinu, Webers „Euryanthe“, „La Gioconda“ by Ponchielli, the Ballett „Siegfried“, the German premiere of „The Passenger“ by Weinberg, „Iphigenie en Tauride“ by Gluck and „Le Rossignol“/“L´enfant et les sortiléges“. He went on tour with State Theater Karlsruhe to Daegu/South-Korea and „Freischütz“, „The flying Dutchman“ und „Tannhäuser“. 2012 he lead „La Gioconda“ at Teatro Politeama in Lecce/Italy, 2013-15 at Theater Basel/Switzerland „Tosca“, „Eugen Onegin“, „Les Contes d'Hoffmann“ & „Cosi fan tutte“ and 2014/15 „La Bohème“ at Leipzig Opera.

He has conducted the Gewandhausorchester Leipzig, Staatskapelle Dresden, Badische Staatskapelle Karlsruhe, Museumsorchester Frankfurt, Philharmonisches Staatsorchester Hamburg, MDR-Sinfonieorchester in Leipzig, Staatsphilharmonie Nürnberg, Hamburger Symphoniker, Deutsche Radio-Philharmonie in Saarbrücken, Orchestre philharmonique de Montréal, Sinfonieorchester Basel, Staatsphilharmonie Rheinland-Pfalz and New Japan Philharmonic.
