Caballé Domenech gab sein Operndebut am Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona und dirigierte das Ensemble beim Savonlinna Festival und am La Fenice in Venedig. Darüber hinaus leitete er Produktionen an den Staatsopern Berlin, Hamburg und Stuttgart, der Dresdner Semperoper, dem Theater an der Wien, Wiener Volksoper, Komischen Oper Berlin, Essener Aalto Theater, dem Capitol du Toulouse, Savonlinna Festival, La Fenice in Venedig, Theatre Royal du Versailles, San Carlo in Neapel, ABAO in Bilbao, Teatro de la Zarzuela in Madrid und dem Sao Carlos in Lissabon.
Zu den jüngsten Höhepunkten zählen Wagners Ring, Der fliegende Holländer, Aida, Tosca und Adriana Lecouvreur an der Oper Halle, Fanciulla del West, Pagliacci und Cavalleria Rusticana an der Hamburgischen Staatsoper sowie Salome und Rosenkavalier am Teatro Mayor in Bogotá. Er dirigierte Konzerte am Teatro Real Madrid mit Bryn Terfel, dem Orquesta del Palau de les Arts in Valencia mit Lang Lang und arbeitete mit Yo-Yo Ma und Itzhak Perlman in Colorado Springs.
Aktuelle Engagements bringen ihn zum Dresdner Festspielorchester, ins Konzerthaus Berlin und den Kulturpalast Dresden mit dem Moritzburg Festival Orchester, zum Orchestra Sinfonica Siciliana nach Palermo, nach Hannover zur NDR Radiophilharmonie, den Dortmunder Philharmonikern, zu Memphis und Portland Symphony, Buffalo Philharmonic sowie nach Oviedo zum Asturias Symphony Orchestra, RTVE Madrid, Barcelona Symphony Orchestra, Málaga Philharmonic Orchestra und Sczcecin Philharmonic und zu Konzerten mit Plácido Domingo nach Madrid & Mérida. Ausserdem Lucia di Lammermoor in Andorra, Carmen in Puerto Rico und Ariadne auf Naxos in Bogotá. Seine aktuelle CD mit Jan Vogler und dem Moritzburg Festival Orchester enthält die Weltersteinspielung des Cellokonzertes von Enrique Casals sowie des Cellokonzertes von Lalo (erschienen bei Sony).
Josep Caballé Domenech wird in Barcelona in einer Musikerfamilie geboren. Neben dem Studium von Klavier, Schlagzeug, Gesang und Violine absolvierte er ein Dirigierstudium in Wien, Schweden und Aspen. Zu seinen Mentoren zählen Sergiu Comisiona, Jorma Panula, David Zinman und Sir Colin Davis. Er war Preisträger des 1. Wettbewerbs für junge Dirigenten des Symphonieorchesters des Fürstentums Asturien (2000) und des 13. internationalen Nicolai-Malko-Wettbewerbs für junge Dirigenten (2001). Außerdem wurde er von der American Academy of Conducting an der AMFS mit dem Aspen Prize ausgezeichnet und als »Protégé« in den Eröffnungszyklus der Rolex Mentor and Protégé Arts Initiative 2002–03 von Sir Colin Davis aufgenommen.
Biography
Josep Caballé Domenech is Conductor Laureate of the Colorado Springs Philharmonic (Music Director 2011-2023) and since 2018 Chief Conductor of the Moritzburg Festival Orchestra. He has also held the position of General Director of the Halle Opera and Staatskapelle Halle from 2013 to 2018, Artistic Director of the Bogotá Philharmonic Orchestra in 2018 and Principal Guest Conductor of the Norköping Symphony between 2005 and 2007.
As guest conductor, Caballé Domenech has conducted a prominent list of orchestras including the Royal Philharmonic, with which he recorded Respighi’s “Roman Trilogy” on Onyx Classics, BBC Philharmonic, Tonhalle Orchester Zurich, hr-Sinfonieorchester, Bayerischen Rundfunk, Bamberg Symphony, WDR Sinfonieorchester, DSO Berlin, Czech Philharmonic, RSO Wien, Tonkünstler Symphony, Belgian National Symphony, Antwerp Symphony, LaVerdi Milano, Royal Stockholm Philharmonic, Swedish Radio Symphony, New Japan Philharmonic and the Symphony Orchestras of Baltimore, Houston, San Antonio, Tucson, Fort Worth and Sichuan, amongst numerous others.
In Spain, he conducts the Spanish National Orchestra, Barcelona Symphony Orchestra, RTVE Orchestra, Principado of Asturias Symphony Orchestra, , Granada Orchestra, Extremadura Orchestra, Valencia Orchestra, Navarra Symphony, Galicia Symphony and Castilla y León Symphony. He is frequently invited to international summer festivals such as the Aspen Music Festival and School, Texas Music Festival, Chautauqua Festival and the Granada International Music and Dance Festival.
Renowned for his career in the operatic field, Caballé Domenech made his debut at the Gran Teatro del Liceo in Barcelona, conducting Così fan tutte and later Il mondo della luna of Haydn, L´elisir d´amore, María del Carmen of Granados and Lucia di Lammermoor and has also conducted the company at the Savonlinna Festival and La Fenice Festival in Venice. Additionally, he has led productions at the Staatsoper Berlin, Hamburg Staatsoper, State Opera Stuttgart, Dresden Semperoper, Theater an der Wien, Volksoper in Vienna, Komische Oper in Berlin, Aalto Theater in Essen, Capitol du Toulouse, Theater Royal du Versailles, San Carlo di Napoli, ABAO-Bilbao Opera, Sao Carlos Theater in Lisbon and the Beijing National Opera.
Opera highlights include Luisa Fernanda de Moreno Torroba at the Theater an der Wien with Plácido Domingo, a Tosca‘s new production at the Volksoper in Vienna, the world premiere of La cabeza del Bautista at the Gran Teatro del Liceo, Wagner’s Ring, The Flying Dutchman, Aida, Tosca, Adriana Lecouvreur and Sweeney Todd at the Halle Opera, Fanciulla del West, Pagliacci and Cavalleria Rusticana at the Hamburg Staatsoper, as well as Salomé and Rosenkavalier at the Teatro Mayor in Bogotá.
Latest highlights are the debuts at the Teatro de la Zarzuela in Madrid and the Teatro Real in concert with Bryn Terfel, a collaboration with Lang Lang and the Orquesta del Palau de les Arts in Valencia and a concert with Yo-Yo Ma at the 90th Anniversary Gala of the Colorado Springs Philharmonic. His latest recording with Jan Vogler and the Moritzburg Festival Orchester includes the world premiere of the celloconcert by Enrique Casals on CD and the Lalo-concert (a Sony release).
Born in Barcelona into a family of musicians, Josep Caballé-Domenech studied piano, percussion, singing and violin. He took conducting lessons with David Zinman, Jorma Panula, Sergiu Comissiona and pursued studies at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Vienna. He was the winner of the 1st Young Conductors Competition of the Principado of Asturias Symphony Orchestra (2000) and the 13th Nicolai Malko International Competition for Young Conductors (2001). Caballé-Domenech was awarded the Aspen Prize from the American Academy of Conducting at Aspen, and also selected as “Protégé” in the inaugural cycle of the Sir Colin Davis’ Rolex Mentor and Protégé Arts Initiative 2002-03.
